Frequently Asked Questions

  • Private Charters

Private Charters are one of our specialties.

Private charters can be a 30 minute scenic flight, a 1 hour scenic flight, or a day out to Whitianga, or somewhere within returning to home base in 1 day. (Kerikeri, Tauranga, Taupo etc.)

We can also provide overnight tours or multi day tours.

Email us at flights@flydc3.nz for more information and discuss ideas.

  • When do you fly?

Our flying season is between November - July.

For Auckland flights we offer at least one Saturday and one Sunday per month (as posted in our calendar).

Other weekends we may be privately chartered, on a special tour, or at an airshow.

  • Do you fly in bad weather?

We do not fly in bad weather.  As this tour is about sightseeing, we will not fly in inclement weather (rain, fog, turbulence, low cloud etc).

The captain for your flight along with the office staff look closely at the weather forecasts up to 10 days ahead. The Met-Service of NZ sends a message to us on the Thursday before and we then send them on to everyone on the flight.

If we don’t fly the day of your initial booking, your tickets are put on hold and we will rebook for another day (at no extra charge).

  • How are we seated?

The seating is 2 x 2 (one window, one aisle).  Groups, couples, friends and family are seated together so even numbers of groups work best.

  • What should I bring with me?

Please bring your: Camera/cell-phone, sunglasses, a warm jacket on a cooler day and a Water bottle.

Souvenirs are also available to purchase - we do accept eftpos/credit card.

For Whitianga Days out we also recommend togs and a towel and hat.

  • Do you have gift vouchers / souvenirs?

Yes gift vouchers are available to purchase for the flights we offer. You can purchase them online from our home or tours pages.

We also have a range of Fly DC3 souvenirs available for purchase as an extra to your booking, or on the day (eftpos available).

Choose from: Hats, Caps and Badges with more items coming soon.

  • Can I bring an infant / young child?

Yes - Infants 0-2 years are free to fly with you but must sit on your lap.   Younger children require a special seatbelt.

Please make sure you indicate in your booking the ages of any children to ensure our cabin crew can plan the seating.

For longer flights – e.g. Whitianga Day Out or an Airshow , a seat can be booked to use with your airline approved child car seat. $60-$100.

  • Reduced Mobility Passengers

There are 5 steps up into our DC3 so everyone flying needs to be able to safely walk up these by themselves or with limited assistance.

We also recommend that young children hold the hand of their adult caregiver.  Our cabin crew are also available to assist.

*We have one wheelchair available for anyone who is not able to use stairs, but still wants to join in.  This means they can come out to the plane for the Captains welcome, and watch while passengers are boarding, the engine start and plane departure.  Our ground crew will then take them back to the Fly DC3 hangar where progress of the flight is shown on Flight Radar 24 while they enjoy a nice cuppa until the flight returns.

*For 30 minute or 1 hour flights only.

  • Can I choose the day/time for a private charter?

Private charters are able to be booked to fly on a weekday or in a weekend (subject to other bookings and crew availability).

Please contact us with your enquiry

  • NZ Warbirds Open Day - Can I book a scenic flight on the day?

During Open days at Ardmore, we cannot operate from our hangar, as we are under the ‘Display’ area. So for safety of crew and passengers we operate from the NZ Warbirds hangars. During the Open day, there are usually 3 lots of Warbird Flight Displays, with the DC3 departing at the end of each display – usually at 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30. You will need to factor in the entry fare for the Open Day, (To be advised).

The next Open day is planned for 4th December 2022.
